Introduction to the internet

Hey readers, just watched "The Social Network" and then decided to start blogging on daily basis. So I decided to document my web3 journey through blogs. Now to be honest I have never written any kind of blog before. So let's get started.

Getting Started

Web3 seems quite complex and scary for beginners. so instead of diving directly into web3, we need to know about web1 and web2.

Web1.0: Read-only (The beginning of the digital world)

In the early 90s (after the invention of the internet), Tim Berners-Lee (a British computer scientist) came up with the idea of HTML(HyperText Markup Language), URI(Uniform Resource Identifier) and HTTP(Hypertext Transfer Protocol).

Then Tim made the first web page "WorldWideWeb.app" and right here the World Wide Web(WWW) was invented! This phase (the early 90s to early 2000s) is known as the web1 phase or the read-only stage of the internet. Here the websites were simple, static and non-interactive.

Web2.0: Read and Write (Revolution in the digital world)

“Web 2.0 is the business revolution in the computer industry caused by the move to the internet as a platform, and any attempt to understand the rules for success on that new platform.”– Tim O’ Reilly.

Web2.0 revolutionized the digital world. The static changed to dynamic or user-generated content. The read-only became read and write. Now people can not only consume but also contribute. Platforms such as Facebook, Twitter,Youtube, etc were created.

The internet users exponentially increased from millions to billions. Web 2.0 brought all the people together regardless of background and position. Web 2.0 became the mainstream internet.

Web3.0: Read, write and own (The Future)

When we hear Web3.0 then the first thing that comes to our mind is Blockchain or maybe NFTs. but we can't say that web3.0 is all about bitcoin or NFTs.

so what actually is web3.0?

Web3.0 is an emerging, blockchain-based evolution that is attempting to decentralize today's web. It is quite difficult to define web3.0 but in simple words, we can say that web3.0 is a network that allows users to read-write and own their content.

Why Web3.0?

  1. It is decentralized: Platforms like facebook, Twitter, etc are centralized. This means that the data stored by these platforms are controlled by authority and can be accessed or breached by anyone. But Web3.0 the ownership gets distributed among its users and builders.

  2. Say you are playing a game(maybe valorant XD) and you buy some cool gun skins and suddenly the game creator deletes your account! Boom! You lose all your gun skins and probably all your money is gone! so how can you prevent this? The answer is Web3.0. It will provide you the ownership of all your digital assets in form of NFTs(Non-fungible tokens), now not even the game's creators can take away your ownership.

3. Blockchain-based: With blockchain, the data and connection across different platforms are distributed quite differently as compared to centralized platforms. The data is stored in a block kind of structure that links to form a chain with other blocks of similar information/data. (more on this topic in upcoming blogs XD)

Summing up

This was just an overview (or history to be more precise) of the evolution of the web. There are a lot more terms that I might cover in upcoming blogs. so stay tuned. Your valuable feedback will be highly appreciated.
